SharePoint 2010 Cannot open workbook because it’s not stored in an Excel Services Application trusted location

Chris McKinley | June 22, 2010

If you are using the Office Web apps in SharePoint 2010 then you may come across this error…

“This workbook cannot be opened because it is not stored in an Excel Services Application trusted location.

To create an Excel Services Application trusted location, contact your system administrator.”

If you happen to be the system administrator and you’ve turned to google bing google to find the answer hopefully this blog post will help you out!

I believe this error is most likely if you are going over SSL as the default trusted location is just http://

Jump into central admin (please ignore my heath analyzer!) and goto Manage service applications.

Click on Excel services Application.

Then click on “Trusted file locations”

You can see that http:// is already there, so you could just add https:// or put in a url to a specific location

Fill in the boxes, I also ticked the trust children box.

Once you have done this go back to your Excel document and it will open up in the browser! Nice.

Opening PDFs in SharePoint 2010

Chris McKinley | May 5, 2010

If you have your nice SP2010 setup you may notice that when you go to open a PDF file it prompts you to save it rather than opening.

This is really annoying and would send everyone here at the school completely bananas! Not to mention the fact that we try to get everything on SharePoint only to force people to save it to their own area!

Never fear there is a solution. It’s in central admin.

Go there and click ‘Manage Web Applications’

Click on the web app you want to change, and go to ‘General Settings’

Scroll down the list until you reach ‘Browser File Handling’

Change the radio box from Strict to Permissive.

Click ok.

Go back to your PDF document and click on it – and it will open up without forcing you to save it somewhere first.

You may have noticed in the first screen shot there was no PDF icon. Well, follow this guide to right that wrong!

SharePoint 2010 Send To Connector Setup

Dave Coleman | February 28, 2010

Through this post I will show you how to setup the send to connector in SharePoint 2010 with this enabled you can move or copy documents from one location to another in your SharePoint install exactly the same way that you can in windows. This post is really a continuation of a previous post “SharePoint 2010 drop Off Library” as to use the send to feature the drop off library needs configuring so please check out the previous post before trying to set up the send to connectors.

In this demo site I have set up 2 document libraries with the aim to be able to move a document from one to the other. I have set these libraries up on the same page but they could be on any sub site that you create.

The first step is to load up central admin and navigate to General Application settings -> Configure Send to Connections

When you click on the “Configure send to connections” link you will be presented with the page illustrated below.

You have to append the connection string with _vti_bin/officialfile.asmx so on my test setup it was http://dave1/_vti_bin/officialfile.asmx i also chose to move the file but you can choose to “copy” or “Copy and leave a link”. When all the details are filled out test the link and you should get the same output as illustrated below

When you go back to your main page and click the down arrow next to a document you should now see a new send to connector displaying whatever text you put in the display name field when you set up your connection.

After clicking the link you will be presented with a success screen and in my case the document will appear in the location that you specified in the connection setup.

How To Change The maximum file size Upload in SharePoint 2010

Dave Coleman | February 23, 2010

This morning I tried to upload a video file to our SharePoint 2010 install in preparation for a presentation tonight and then realised that the default 50mb file size limit was still set so while I was changing the settings to allow larger files I thought I would do a quick post on how/where the setting is and what to change.

First of all login to Central Admin and navigate to

Central Administration -> Application Management -> Manage Web Applications

Once there highlight the web application that you want to change and then click on general settings

Once in general settings scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see the maximum upload size the default setting is 50mb this can be can set to a maximum size of 2047mb. If you try to go beyond this it does flag up and tell you that you have exceeded the Maximum size.

SharePoint Designer Settings in SharePoint 2010

Dave Coleman | February 11, 2010

We have engaged Sam Dolan http://www.pinkpetrol.com/ a SharePoint design specialist to help brand our SharePoint 2010 sites in readiness for our role out later this year. As Sam started work on the demo site last night I had a twitter conversation with him as he did not have access to the master page and it was only when I checked in

Central Admin -> General Application Settings -> SharePoint Designer

That I found that there are 4 settings boxes and out of the box only one is enabled the settings are:-

Allow SharePoint Designer to be used in the web application (On by default)

Allow site collection administrators to detach pages from the site template

Allow site collection administrators to customize master pages and layout pages

Allow site collection administrators to see the URL structure of their website

After enabling the Customize master pages Sam was able to continue with the work. It seems that Microsoft are tightening security setting all through their product range which I must admit is not a bad idea, gone are the days of creating a share on a server and have everyone full control over the share.

SharePoint 2010 Central Admin Map

Dave Coleman | February 9, 2010

One of the big improvements in SharePoint 2010 has to be Central Admin but I like many others I would guess would still come up against the age old ‘Where was that? I saw it before but now cannot find it’ so I thought I would take the time to map out central admin in picture format so I always have a reference guide. So I will start with ‘Application Management’ and ‘Monitoring’ if you would like the visio drawings that I used to make the JPG files let me know your contact details via comments and I will send out once the series of posts is complete.
